ARTIST'S STATEMENT
"It's about getting out of the victim role. Getting out of that role can
be painful before it gets better - just like the hammer has to press on
the fingers in order to get leverage to pull out the stake. The
base represents guilt and shame; the hand is our beliefs about ourselves
and life in general. The hammer represents the truth and
self-realization which can release us from our own misconceptions."
Deidre went on to explain "Many people think it has to do with Christ
and the Crucifiction, but that never occurred to me until I was in the
process of making it. The vision actually came to me after I read my
horoscope telling me to get off the persecution complex. I thought
about it and thought yeah, I feel picked on sometimes. This vision came
into my mind. As I was putting it together, the meaning got
complicated with the religious overtones of it. With those issues coming
to the forefront, emotionally it was a very difficult piece to finish. I
unexpectedly became aware I was fearful of blasphemy and the
consequences and on and on. It became a very tough piece to do.
The project actually became a release for me. I had no idea the
adventure I was going to embark upon after reading that one little line
in my horoscope."
