From the time Daphne was old enough to hold a crayon in her hand, she has
been drawing and painting. This love of art has grown and matured over the
years, dictating her career choices and inspiring her to seek her own cultural
heritage.
Daphne was born in Little Falls, New York to parents whose ancestry
includes a background in Scottish and French. When there was art in school, she
flourished. But she didn’t receive formal training until she went to college
(The College of Idaho) and received a B.A, in art (1963) and eventually a M.A.
in Art at Sacramento State University in 1969. She began teaching high school
art at the age of 23 and continued for 29 years. During that time she married
and had a daughter.
Daphne taught at Cordova High School (Rancho Cordova) her entire teaching
career except for her first year, which was in Wenatchee, Washington.
Since Daphne "retired" from teaching in the public schools (with
some college summer school programs), she joined the Crocker Art Museum as a
docent and devotes most of her time to painting, competing in local, regional,
and national art shows, and horseback riding. Daphne has been a docent at the
Museum for six years and a mentor docent for the past two years. She has
recently been hired to teach drawing classes to adults.
Her media of choice is watercolor, however, as a teacher, she has used
many different mediums. Because of her love for animals, they are a popular
theme in her work. Her own horse has been an inspiration for many of her
paintings. She has just completed a whimsical and imaginative series titled
"Animals and Artists" and is currently drawing up ideas for her next
body of work.
